UIPDATE: September 6th - CAMBRIDGE TIMES ARTICLE ON Scorpions re-purpose idea. http://www.cambridgetimes.ca/sports-story/6837567-scorpions-make-pitch-for-repurposed-arena-space/

Scorpions Youth Volleyball Club in Cambridge Ontario have put forward to the City of Cambridge Council and Task Force members a proposal to re-purpose a surplus arena with 4 sport courts. Here are the facts.

  • Refurbish arena by installing 4 volleyball sports courts
  • It would take maximum 5 days to put in the 4 sport courts in an existing arena. ( NOTE: They do it every year at RIM park. They turn all the hockey rinks into volleyball courts for the provincial championships in about a week)
  • Ready to use. Cost is about $50,000. per court including net systems and flooring. So full cost is $300,000.
  • We would have the only volleyball specific facility in the Waterloo Region.
  • Scorpions Volleyball Club will partner with the City of Cambridge and put up between $30,000-$50,000.
  • Scorpions Volleyball Club had 1,000 youth registered in their programs in 2015.
  • With the school boards charging prices of $1,500. to book gyms on a weekend, there is a need and an excellent opportunity for the City of Cambridge to provide affordable court space.
  •  No need to build a third gym at new facility (Save $2.5 million)

Fantastic initiative! Infrastructure is definitely lagging behind the growth of indoor volleyball in the region.

Is volleyball a year round activity, or would the arena sit unused for months, and could it be used for something else when not in use for volleyball?

Hi Jon,Thanks for the post. Volleyball runs from 1st week of September til last week of April usually. There are nationals early May. Yes other groups in the summer could use the courts, as long as the sport does not damage the sports court.
