Sept. 14, 2022…. For immediate release…..News Directors…. The Cambridge Youth Scorpions Volleyball Club is the largest non-profit indoor and beach volleyball club in the Waterloo Region.
The Scorpions Club is holding their competitive team tryouts for up to 500 youth ranging from the ages of 10 to 18 starting Saturday September 17th, at Jacob Hespeler Secondary School in Cambridge (355 Holiday Inn Dr.). The tryouts begin at 9:00am and run all day ending at 9:15pm. There is usually a cost to attend the tryouts but this year the Club wanted to see if we could help out the community while giving the athletes the opportunity to make a competitive team. With that in mind we have been coordinating with the Cambridge Food Bank to collect non-perishable items and money. We’re challenging the athletes to raise over the equivalent of 312 lbs of food (which equates to $1000) for the Food Bank in the hopes that we can help give back to the community in this time of great need. You do not have to attend the tryouts to donate to the Food Bank that day. You can just come to the gym and drop off your donation. Mark Morell, Scorpions Food Bank Champion states, “ We felt it was important for the club to continue to highlight the focus that we are a community-based club and to give back to the community. We appreciate any help the media can give us on spreading the word about this event.” To learn more about the Scorpions club visit their website at http://scorpionsvolleyball.ca or contact Mark Morell about the club's food bank event at info@scorpionsvolleyball.ca.

I will take on the role of Past President and will volunteer to be the indoor/outdoor development program coordinator. I will also do promotional work and will help out with our Beach and Grass Volleyball Programs. Coach Tracy and Coach Renee are no strangers to the club has they have been deeply involved in the club since they arrived as Coaches and sitting on our Board of Directors. The importance of succession planning was important to me so the club could continue to flourish. I do believe that we have in place two strong co-presidents, a Board of Directors and Coaches that believe in community based volleyball. The pandemic has and will continue to affect us. It has made us rethink how we live our lives. The club must continue to redefine how we can move forward safely to provide volleyball for the youth of our community. I am thankful for all the board members, coaches, volunteers, players, parents past and present that allowed me to fulfill my dream of starting a youth volleyball club in Cambridge. What we have accomplished is significant.
A special shout out to Tammy Ball and Steve Furnace. You have been with me since 2010 and it is truly appreciated. I must thank my wife Debra and children Dylan and Katie who have allowed me to dedicate most of my free time since 2010 to running the club. So a GIANT thank you to the COACHES that stepped forward to help. We could not do it without you! I look forward to see where the club goes under Tracy and Renee’s excellent guidance.
